Opened as Marymount College in 1962, the school originally acted as a women’s junior college, founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary- A Roman Catholic Community of women. As more students began to enroll, innovations were made and the school elected its first President, Donald E. Ross. Over the next few years, the school changed from a traditional women’s liberal arts school to include a more diverse curriculum and wider population which also included men. Some additions made during these early years included the addition of the Pine Tree Camps, which provided on campus childcare, which now enroll mores that 1,500 children during the summer for camp.
Into the 1980’s the school expanded to a four-year degree school, offering new programs in health and human services, history, politics, engineering and business. Officially named Lynn University in 1991, the Tier 2 School now offers 4 degree programs in 5 colleges.
Their prominent Fight Knights athletics teams have awarded Lynn University with the title of a NCAA Division II institution. Athletes can participate in a range of sports at the school, including baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer and cross country. While a small-sized school, Lynn University places a heavy emphasis on a personalized approach to education and the power of iPad learning. In 2012, Lynn University hosted the third and final presidential debate between U.S. President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.
